Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) West Region members laid the most speeding and impaired charges of any Region policed by the OPP over the course of the “Operation Impact” Thanksgiving long weekend traffic campaign.
Officers from OPP West Region’s 13 detachments laid a total of 2,217 charges for a variety of infractions after making 2,427 traffic stops over the course of the campaign October 6th to 9th.
The campaign focused on the leading bad driving behaviours that contribute to death, injury and property damage on Ontario roads and highways: speeding, failure to wear a seatbelt, distracted driving, and impaired driving (also known as “The Big Four”).
OPP West Region “Big Four” traffic campaign charges are below:
- Speeding: 1,386
- Failure to wear a seatbelt: 46
- Distracted Driving: 16
- Impaired Driving: 45
West Region members also charged 26 individuals with Stunt Driving/Racing.
“Operation Impact” is led by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, in support of “Canada’s Road Safety Strategy”. West Region Command Staff is thankful that most drivers chose to drive safely over the Thanksgiving weekend.
