Impaired / 80 or over
On Friday January 3rd, 2020, officers at the West Grey Police Service were dispatched to a restaurant on Garafraxa Street North, Durham, where it was reported that a driver had just walked into the restaurant and was possibly impaired.
A patron in the restaurant watched the accused make a right turn from the middle of the traffic lane in front of a vehicle travelling the same way. He advised that the accused then almost drove into a parked vehicle. The patron came into the restaurant, ordered his meal and smelled of alcohol.
Police arrived on scene and noted that the accused vehicle was blocking access to the parking lot. The male driver was observed to be sitting at a table waiting for his food. Police approached the male who showed signs of impairment and consequently placed the man under arrest for Impaired Operation.
The man was then transported to the West Grey Police Station where he provided two samples registering over three times the legally prescribed limit.
Subsequent to police investigation, a 57 year old Hanover man was arrested and charged with one count of Operation while impaired and one count of having a blood alcohol concentration of 80 or over. The Hanover man’s driver’s licence was immediately suspended for ninety days and his vehicle was impounded for 7 days. The accused was processed and later released from custody on with a court date of January 29th 2020 where he will answer to the charge at the Walkerton Courthouse.
Over the past 7 days, West Grey Police hosted 13 RIDE programs across the municipality. Officers seized alcohol and laid several liquor licence offences however we are pleased that nobody was found to be impaired. West Grey Police will continue to host RIDE programs throughout the year and look forward to continuing to be closer to achieving our goal of having the safest roadways in Ontario.
