Museum after-hours Mixer a look back at Victorian times

For approximately 90 people, it was an opportunity to attend a gala of sorts as the Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre (BCM&CC) hosted ‘Behind the Veil’ on November 30th

Although it was billed as an after-hours Museum Mixer event, those at the sold-out event took advantage of the timing the day before Halloween to dress up in their favourite costumes.

According to Program Coordinator, Evan Vatri, the evening is an “introspection in Victorian spiritualism and the ‘realm beyond. Victorians experimented with technology and things like seances.”

The Mixer included a variety of Victorian-flavoured events that include tarot card readings, a psychic event and Angel Therapist Practitioner Carol Van der Maaden.

Outside on the Museum patio, the Breathing Dragon fire dancers performed and deliciously delectable foods were served up by mobile food outlet, Bombshell Stella’s.

On the lower level, the Dry Goods Store was turned into an ‘absinthe’ parlour where Vatri took visitors through a variety of cocktails based on absinthe.  “In the 1800s, absinthe was a drink of choice,” said Vatri, as he also explained the history of the drink and its popularity during Victorian times.”
