Huron Fringe Birding Festival receives prestigious award

Huron Fringe Birding Festival Organizing Committee was the recent recipient of the Ontario Nature’s W.E. Saunders Natural History Award for its successful program that raises awareness of nature among people of all ages.

Ontario Nature’s Conservation Awards recognizes excellence by honouring the work of individuals, groups, government agencies and corporations to protect wild species and wild spaces in Ontario.

The Fringe Festival, based out of beautiful MacGregor Point Provincial Park, is held each year in the Spring over two four-day weekends that celebrate the migration of birds as they continue north through the fringe of land that follows Lake Huron’s great shoreline and channels up the beautiful Bruce Peninsula.

From the Festival’s base in MacGregor Point Provincial Park, birding takes place throughout the wide variety of habitats and, over the two weekends several keynote speakers lend their expertise to the many birders who come for the experience.

While the focus is on birding, there are also 90 events overall that include sessions on botany, photography, geology, cultural history and more, along with fun events.

A banquet, with a keynote speaker, is held the opening Saturday of the Festival and a ‘dinner under the tent’ is featured on the second Saturday.

Unfortunately, this year due to Covid-19, the Festival was cancelled but plans are already underway for 2021.

Ontario Nature strives to protect and enhance the natural legacy for future generations.
