Bruce County Museum hosting Black History Month – CANCELLED

Tomorrow, January 4th, Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre will be hosting a special presentation in recognition of Black History Month: Erasing Erasure.

Local historian Aly Boltman and Dorothy Abbott of the Grey Councty Black Cultural Society will present the worth that lead to the recognition of the 1,200 people that were buried in unmarked graves in Owen Sound Potters’ Field.

Abbott’s family, like many others escaping slavery in the mid-1800s in the United States via the ‘underground’ railroad, arrived at the northernmost terminal in Owen Sound.

Arriving in Canada, many black settlers faced systematic racism and their poverty lead to burial in Potters’ Field.

The Potters’ Field project has won five awards including an Architectural Conservancy Ontario Heritage Award.

Following the presentation taking place from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. in the Bruce Power Theatre, refreshments will be served.
