As of January 1, 2026, Ontario entered into a new era of recycling and, in Bruce County, there are now more items being accepted as recyclable, including foam packaging and cartons and cups.
Residents should now sort recyclables into two streams – fibres and containers for curb-side pickup.
Bruce Area Solid Waste Recycling (BASWR) is the not-for-profit organization in Bruce County that maintains the recycling program through its member municipalities.

In 1989, the Towns of Port Elgin and Southampton, along with Saugeen Township formed a committee to look at the feasibility of recycling. By 1990, Bruce Area Recycling became a reality and was joined by the towns of Kincardine, Walkerton and Wiarton, plus the Villages of Hepworth and Lucknow.
The present recycling plant was completed in November, 1990 with the first two special collection trucks and Blue Box recycling became a reality in Bruce County.
