In a recent media release and as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Bruce County Public Library (BCPL) has waived all outstanding library fines and will eliminate all overdue fines for the remainder of 2020. In an effort to support our communities, eliminating fines will make the Library more inclusive by reducing barriers to accessing Library services.
Libraries see increased usage during economic downturns and eliminating fines can support individuals, families, and communities through the pandemic and recovery. Removing fines from children’s materials would allow more children to access materials, encourage every child to have a library card, and promote early learning and literacy.
As a public library, BCPL is mandated to provide equitable service to all residents. Eliminating fines provides an opportunity to reimagine library services and reconnect with their core mission of providing all the information, knowledge, and entertainment resources you need to achieve your goals, foster your interests, and realise your dreams.
“We understand that the pandemic is making life harder for the users of Bruce County Libraries. We are eliminating late fines for the remainder of 2020 in order to take that burden off their shoulders and in an effort to encourage everyone to make ample use of our amazing public libraries” says Saugeen Shores Mayor Luke Charbonneau, Chair of the Bruce County Public Library Board.
While currently this policy is applicable until the end of 2020, the Library plans on investigating the possibility of eliminating overdue fines as a permanent change.
As of Monday, August 17th, all 17 branches were reopened to the public. A focus on safety of staff and patrons continues to be the Library’s top priority, and branch hours of service will remain reduced to allow for additional cleaning.
