International Women’s Day Celebration March 3rd

Bruce County and the Women’s House Serving Bruce & Grey will jointly host an International Women’s Day event on March 3rd from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Lakeshore Recreation Centre in Port Elgin.

The evening will advocate for careers in the skilled trades for men and women. The Women’s House will also honour two extraordinary, local individuals with Women of Distinction Awards.

Keynote speaker Jamie McMillan is a Journeyman, Ironworker and Boilermaker and the founder of KickAss Careers, a school and community outreach program. McMillan engages, educates and encourages youth to consider careers in the mechanical, industrial, technology, construction, and advanced manufacturing industries.

“There’s a huge demand for skilled trades workers in Bruce County” said Jill Roote, Bruce County’s Manager of Economic Development. “We need to encourage women and men to consider these fulfilling careers so that our local economy can continue to grow.”

This year, there will be another spectacular line-up. You’ll hear all about the amazing contributions to community the winners of this year’s awards have made.

The winners have all been contacted to confirm that they can be at the event, so it’s official now! The winners for this year are:

  • Women’s House Serving Bruce & Grey 2020 Woman of Distinction Award: Ruth Montgomery
  • Women’s House Serving Bruce & Grey 2020 Young Woman of Distinction Award: Morgan Ritchie
  • Women’s House Serving Bruce & Grey 2020 Inspiring Woman of Distinction Award: Amy Bross

Normally, we just give out two awards (Woman and Young Woman of Distinction), but this year we had a submission that was so compelling, and was a winner by a wide margin, Amy Bross. Unfortunately, Amy passed away from a tragic accident recently and, since part of our criteria for being eligible for the award is that the recipient must be present to accept it, that made her ineligible. Since she made such an impact, not only on her family, her nominator and our judges, but also on our community, it made us determined that she needed to be acknowledged in some way. So, for this year only, we have created a posthumous award, called the Inspiring Woman of Distinction, and her family will accept the award on her behalf. We hope you will join us to hear all about all of our exceptional winners.

There will be appetizers and a dessert bar, cash bar available, a Trivia Game, Silent Auction and Live Auction, and then Jamie McMillan, our Keynote Speaker will speak.
